The Hong Kong women’s epee fencing team have qualified for the Olympics despite not competing at World Cup in Russia because of the pandemic and they have South Korea to thank.
The world’s top four teams following the World Cup in Kazan gain entry to the Olympics.
South Korea reached the final at the World Cup and managed to squeeze in to the world’s top four, joining China, Poland, and Russia.
That freed up a spot for an additional Asian side in Tokyo. That spot went to Hong Kong who qualified as Asia’s number one team not in the world’s top four. They’ll be joined by Europe’s number one side Italy, along with Estonia and the United States.
That means Hong Kong now have two fencing teams confirmed for the Olympics. The SAR’s men’s foil team qualified last year by taking bronze at the Cairo World Cup.
