Becoming world no.1 is a dream come true: Cheung

Hong Kong’s Olympic fencing hero Cheung Ka-long on Tuesday said he’s “extremely delighted and honoured” to take the top spot in the world foil rankings after last weekend’s World Cup event in Serbia.

Writing on social media, Cheung said his aim after winning gold in the Tokyo Olympics last year was to become world number one, adding that it was a dream come true.

He thanked the Hong Kong Sports Institute, his coach, teammates, his parents and family as well as Hong Kong residents for their love and support.

He also said he hopes to continue striving for good results in all of his upcoming matches, while encouraging people to work hard to realise their dreams.

The top fencer added that he hopes Hong Kong can ride out the pandemic soon so that life can return to normal.
