China beat Germany in women’s table tennis semis

Germany on Wednesday were soundly beaten by China in the second semi-final of the Tokyo Olympics women’s table tennis team competition.

China took the lead after Chen Meng and Wang Manyu easily overcame the German duo of Shan Xiaona and Petrissa Solja in the opening doubles match.

Chen and Wang did not lose a single game en route to an 11-9, 11-2 and 11-4 victory.

Sun Yingsha then doubled China’s lead when she posted an 11-6, 11-4, 11-9 win against Germany’s Han Ying.

Chen, the women’s singles gold medallist, secured China’s place in the final thanks to a 3-1 victory over Solja.

Chen dropped the first game 5-11 before reeling off the next three 11-4, 11-9 and 13-11.

The 3-0 scoreline mirrored that of Hong Kong’s defeat to Japan on Tuesday, and means the Germans will play Hong Kong for the bronze medal on Thursday morning at 10am Hong Kong time.

China will battle Japan for the gold medal at 6:30pm Hong Kong time, also on Thursday.
