HK wins bronze in wheelchair badminton event

Hong Kong shuttler Daniel Chan on Sunday bagged a bronze medal in the men’s WH2 wheelchair badminton event at the Tokyo Paralympics, after beating South Korea’s Kim Kyung-hoon 2-0.

Chan, who ranks second in the world, narrowly won the first game 24-22 against Kim, the fifth-ranking player.

The SAR representative then went on to comfortably take the second set 21-10.

Speaking to the media after the match, Chan said that it was harder than expected because he had hand cramps the day before and felt unwell towards the end of the first bout on Sunday.

The paralympian thanked his mother and Hong Kong people for supporting him.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam congratulated Chan for winning a fourth medal for Hong Kong in the games.

“With excellent skills, [Chan] gave his all in the competitions and was undaunted in the face of strong opponents, winning a bronze medal in the final match. I believe that all Hong Kong people are overjoyed and I extend my warmest congratulations to him,” she said in a statement.
