Italian envoy has high hopes for Beijing Olympics

The Italian consul general in Hong Kong, Clemente Contestabile, said he will be cheering on Hong Kong and mainland athletes set to compete in the Winter Olympics in Beijing next month.

The SAR is set to send three competitors to the games – its largest-ever squad – and Contestabile told RTHK in an interview arranged by the China new Era Foundation that he hopes both the Hong Kong and China teams will “perform brilliantly.”

“The Olympic spirit relies on solidarity and fair play, and as the world leaders said at the G20 Rome, the next Winter Olympics will show the human resilience after the pandemic,” he said.

Italy will host the 2026 Winter Olympics in the cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
