Paralympic chief plays down prize money comparisons

The head of the Hong Kong delegation to the Tokyo Paralympics said on Monday that it’s hard for people to compare the prize money for Paralympians and Olympians, because the nature of their sport is different.

Boccia double medallist Leung Yuk-wing said after returning from Japan that the discrepancy in prize money shouldn’t be so big – noting that his mixed pair BC4 team are to share HK$800,000 for their silver, while a team at the Olympics would have shared HK$5 million for winning the same medal.

Delegation chief Elaine Wu said on RTHK that as more people get to learn more about sports for people with disabilities, she hopes there would be more subventions and sponsorships.

Hong Kong wrapped up their games with two silvers and three bronzes – the first time since Seoul in 1988 that the team was unable to snatch a gold medal.

Wu said it’s hard to compare different editions of the Paralympics because there’s been much uncertainty in the build up to this year’s delayed games.

She said the overall performance of team Hong Kong was outstanding, particularly with Paralympic debutants Daniel Chan and Chu Man-kai grabbing medals in badminton.

Wu added that each athlete has their own touching story, and their experiences brought positive energy to society.
