Top cyclist Sarah Lee aims high in Tokyo Olympics

Hong Kong track cyclist Sarah Lee said on Saturday that she has her eye on two Olympic medals this summer as she bounces back from injury.

The 2012 Olympic medalist said she was grateful for the opportunity to compete, because it will be her third time competing in the world’s biggest stage, after losing – and being injured – in the same event five years ago.

“My goal is to get medals in two events,” Lee said.

Lee together with Jessica Lee, will be competing in the women’s sprint and keirin, while other female cyclists like Leung Bo-yee, Pang Yao, and Yang Qianyu will be participating in the madison and omnium races. Choy Hiu-fung is the only male cyclist from the Hong Kong’s team to compete in the road race event.

While some of Lee’s competitors will be participating in both individual and team races for seven consecutive days in the Olympic, she said she would enjoy the advantage of only racing in her own events.

Lee said this might give the Hong Kong contingent an edge because some strong opponents might have to race in team events ahead of individual races, so they would end up competing seven days in a row, while the SAR cyclists would be competing for only five.

Thanks to the hard work from the Sports Institute and other bodies, Lee said the pandemic had not affect her much, as she was able to race with other members of the Hong Kong team regularly.

“I think the challenge is not about Covid-19, it’s about the games.. I just hope to prepare and perform my best ” said Lee.
