Official: Philippine president recovering from COVID-19

MANILA / SINGAPORE – Press Secretary Rose Beatrix Cruz-Angeles has said that Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos is recovering from COVID-19.

Quoting Marcos' doctor, Angeles said the Philippine leader "is doing well and very much in stable condition," adding Marcos has no fever and still has a sense of taste and smell.

"(There is) no sign of respiratory distress or pneumonia, (and his) vital signs are within normal limit," Angeles said. Marcos "will be subjected to further laboratory examination as may be needed."

On Sunday, the Philippines' Department of Health reported 2,018 new COVID-19 infections, the highest in nearly five months, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 3,718,467.

The Philippines reported the highest single-day tally on January 15 this year, with 39,004 new cases. The country, with around 110 million population, has tested over 30.9 million people since the disease emerged.

Singapore

Singapore reported 6,423 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total tally to 1,530,304.

Of the new cases, 302 cases were detected through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests and 6,121 through ART (antigen rapid test) tests, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health.

Among the PCR cases, 285 were local transmissions and 17 were imported cases. Among the ART cases with mild symptoms and assessed to be of low risk, there were 5,915 local transmissions and 206 imported cases, respectively.

A total of 668 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with 18 cases in intensive care units.

Four deaths were reported from COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total death toll to 1,432, the ministry said.

Vietnam

HANOI – Vietnam recorded 465 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the lowest daily number in over a year, according to its Ministry of Health.

The infections brought the total tally to 10,754,813 with 43,089 deaths. Nationwide, 9,764,864 COVID-19 patients, or nearly 91 percent of the infections, have so far recovered.

Nearly 235.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including over 207.7 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.
