Russia says ‘provocative’ drone attack on Iran could trigger escalation

Russia on Monday condemned Sunday's drone strike on a military factory in Iran and warned against what it called "provocative" actions that could trigger an escalation in an already tense situation.

"Such destructive actions could have unpredictable consequences for peace and stability in the Middle East," Moscow's Foreign Ministry said.

In Ukraine, which accuses Iran of supplying hundreds of drones to Russia, a senior aide to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy linked the incident directly to the conflict there.

"Explosive night in Iran," Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted on Sunday. "Did warn you."

A US official told Reuters that Israel appears to have been behind the attack.

Iran has acknowledged sending drones to Russia but says they were sent before the Ukraine crisis began last year.
