HK shuttler to go for Paralympics gold

Hong Kong shuttler Chu Man-kai will fight for gold at the Tokyo Paralympics on Sunday, after he defeated his Brazilian opponent in the semi-finals of the men’s singles SH6 event.

Vitor Goncalves Tavares of Brazil started off strong and won 21-15 in the first game.

But Chu quickly fought back in the second game, winning 21-18; and he soon won the decisive third game as well.

His 2-1 victory means a medal is guaranteed for Hong Kong in the badminton event, which made its debut at the Paralympics this year.

After the match, Chu thanked his coach for helping him regain confidence after he lost the first game, adding that he is very happy about his result.

The Hong Kong athlete will face Krishna Nagar from India in the battle for gold.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong badminton player Chan Ho-yuen will have to play for bronze, after losing to top-seeded Kim Jung-jun of South Korea in the men’s singles WH2 category.

The second-seed Chan won the first game of his semi-finals 21-15, but the South Korean recovered and secured a 2-1 victory in the end.

The Hong Kong player applauded his opponent’s performance, saying he himself wasn’t concentrated enough and his nervousness caused some issues with his racket-holding hand.

Chan will take on another South Korean player, Kim Kyung-hoon, in his fight for a medal.

The bronze medal match will also take place on Sunday.
